Today, at The Culinary Institute of America, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer revealed that Crown Maple Syrup from Dutchess County and Golden Harvest Farms’ apples from Columbia County will be served at the 2013 Inaugural Luncheon. Schumer also noted that the head chef of the Inaugural Luncheon, Shannon Shaffer, is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. Schumer, Chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, said Crown Maple will be used in two different courses in the Inaugural Luncheon. It will be used in butternut squash puree used in the meal’s second course, featuring bison with red potato horseradish cake and a wild huckleberry reduction, and in the dessert featuring Hudson Valley apple pie with sour cream ice cream, aged cheddar cheese and honey. Schumer also announced that Golden Harvest Farms Apples will be those served in the dessert course for the Presidential Inaugural Luncheon. Golden Harvest Farms in Valatie, NY, will provide two different types of apples, Ida Red and Gala, both will be served at the Presidential Inaugural Luncheon.

What’s more, the luncheon will be prepared by a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. Schumer unveiled further details of the Inaugural luncheon in which the products will be featured and was joined by Inaugural Chef, Shannon Shafer; Hudson Valley Economic Development President, Mike Oates; President of Crown Maple, Tyge Rugenstein; Crown Maple Head Chef, Jacob Griffin; Derek Grout of Golden Harvest Orchard, and officials from The Culinary Institute of America.
Crown Maple is owned by Robb and Lydia Turner who entered the maple sugaring business so they could preserve the majestic maple groves located on their property in Dutchess County for future generations to enjoy. Through sustainable forestry practices, Crown Maple is preparing for the future and also keeping the sugar bush healthy and productive today – which helps create some of the purest maple syrup available. Crown Maple Syrup is entering into their third year of production and is still crafted exclusively from the sap produced by 25,000 sugar and red maple trees on their 800-acre sustainably managed farm and other local properties located in Dutchess and Putnam Counties. These varieties of maple produce the sweetest sap on the planet and, combined with the temperature and terrain of the Hudson River Valley, make it possible for Crown Maple to produce high quality organic syrup.
Golden Harvest Farms has been growing apples and pressing cider in the Hudson Valley since the 1950s. The 200-acre apple farm includes a year-round farm market, bakery and distillery. The farm sustainably grows over 20 varieties of apples, from traditional pie apples like Ida Red to new eating apples such as Honey Crisp. The retail farm market and distillery are open to the public year round. In the fall, families enjoy pick-your-own apples with tractor rides and school groups schedule educational farm tours. Owner Alan Grout continues to improve and invest in the orchards that have been sustaining the family for four generations.
The luncheon, hosted by the members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, has been a tradition for more than a century. Approximately 200 guests including the President, Vice President, members of their families, the Supreme Court, Cabinet members, and members of Congressional leadership will attend the event in Statuary Hall.
In addition to Crown Maple syrup and apples from Golden Harvest Farms, the luncheon menu will feature a number of New York products, including the third course, a Hudson Valley apple pie with sour cream ice cream, aged cheese, and honey. Cooperstown Cheese Company, in Otsego, NY, will be supplying the cheese. The honey will come from Seaway Trail Honey in Rochester. Two of the wines to be served along the first and second course also hail from New York. Three vineyards in the Finger Lakes Region, Anthony Road Winery, Fox Run Vineyards, and Red Newt Cellars, have collaborated to produce a Tierce 2010 Finger Lakes Dry Riesling. A 2009 merlot from Bedell Cellars, from the North Fork of Long Island, will be served alongside the second course.
The luncheon menu reflects Schumer’s choice of a theme for the 57th Inaugural Ceremonies. “Faith in America’s Future” commemorates the United States’ perseverance and unity and marks the sesquicentennial year of the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the new Capitol Dome in 1863. When the Civil War threatened to bring construction of the Dome to a halt, workers pressed onward, even without pay, until Congress approved additional funding to complete the Dome that would become a symbol of unity and democracy to the entire world. The menu features American agricultural products that have long been popular in our cuisine, but with an added modern touch. It is a celebration of American farms and agriculture, with a nod to their bright future and continued place in our culture.
The Joint Committee was authorized by S. Con. Res. 35, which passed the Senate on March 1, 2012, and the House on March 5th. Members of JCCIC are appointed by the Vice President and the Speaker of the House. In accordance with tradition, the Senate representatives on JCCIC are Majority Leader Harry Reid, Rules Committee Chairman Charles E. Schumer, and Rules Committee Ranking Member Lamar Alexander. The House members of JCCIC are Speaker John A. Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.
S. Con. Res. 35 established the date of the 2013 Inauguration as Monday, January 21, 2013, since January 20, 2013 falls on a Sunday. This is the seventh time in U.S. history that the constitutionally mandated Inauguration date has fallen on a Sunday. The last time was for President Ronald Reagan’s second Inauguration in 1985. When this occurs, the public ceremonies traditionally are held on Monday.
In addition, January 21, 2013 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It will be the second time that this federal holiday has coincided with a Presidential Inauguration. The first was President Bill Clinton’s second Inauguration in 1997.
