Robb Turner dreamed of owning property in upstate New York that he and his wife Lydia and daughters could enjoy as a family retreat. Turner, who grew up on a family farm in Illinois, settled on an 800-acre estate in Dover Plains, Dutchess County. There, the Turners discovered they owned a treasure trove of century-old sugar maple trees.

“It was early spring, and we were able to sample the syrup from the trees,” Turner says. “Because of the ideal climate and soil conditions, its taste was far removed from mass-produced syrups.
