Making Sense of The Different Types of “Maple Syrup”

Table Syrup (aka Waffle Syrup, Pancake Syrup): Created with less expensive, inferior ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup to approximate the taste of real maple syrup. Contains no real maple, and uses artificial ingredients to add flavor and increase viscosity.

Maple-Flavored Syrup: May contain some real maple, but any maple used is supplemented with additional (and frequently artificial) ingredients and additives.

Pure Maple Syrup: Products labeled “pure maple syrup” must be made entirely from maple, but it is not specified from where. Many pure maple syrups are blended in large batches created in many different locations. Often, blending is used to mask off-flavors and tastes by combining inferior (or inferiorly produced) maple syrup with batches of higher-quality or taste.

Estate-Produced Pure Maple Syrup: Crown Maple Syrup is an unblended pure maple syrup, crafted from a single-estate location.
